Strangers Club | Panama

This project was the confluence of Dutch East Design’s continuing work in The Casco in Panama City, and the long relationship with the collective of bartenders from Macao Trading Company and Employees Only. A strong synergy resulted in an interior design and brand identity which was highly contextual, blending the tropical and historical vibes of Central America with the client’s New York roots.

The Schofield Hotel | Cleveland

Located in the heart of downtown Cleveland, this landmark building designed by Dutch East Design has been lovingly restored to accommodate the city’s first boutique hotel, as well as new luxury apartments. The Cleveland Restoration Society and AIA Cleveland awarded the project the Award of Excellence in Exterior Restoration, and the project received an AIA Merit Award in 2016. Dutch East responded to the sculptural terracotta exterior with a warm, modern interior. Throughout the interior, finishes and furnishings present a sophisticated design sensibility, while also allowing a fun, interactive thread to weave through the experience.

M. Bird | Tampa

Dutch East Design provided naming, branding, and interior design services for M. Bird, Tampa, Florida. It is a 3,500-square-foot cocktail lounge set atop the historical Armature Works in the Tampa Heights neighborhood. The client group was a collaboration between the developer of Armature Works, the hospitality group BE1 concepts, and Dutch East Design’s long-term client Noel Cruz.

Jue Lan Club | New York City

Dutch East Design converted the beautiful church rectory, formerly the site of the Limelight nightclub, into a Chinese glam restaurant. The inspiration for the space came from a group of revolutionary Chinese painters and personalities from the Limelight days, such as Peter Gatien and Andy Warhol. Each space within the restaurant is distinguished from the next, retaining much of the building’s character while introducing a rich and contemporary intervention with many custom furnishings and fixtures. Inspired by the deep and penetrating stills from Kar Wai Wong’s cinematography, Dutch East established the three underlying principles that guide the design.

The Gates | Miami

The Gates Hotel, South Beach, Miami is the new identity of the former Aloft, originally the historic Ankara Motel. The property required a significant about-turn with regard to its street presence, flipping its entry from the rear-facing porte-cochere to a discreet but much more pedestrian-friendly entry off Collins Avenue. Naturally, this had a dramatic effect on the flow of the lobby, and all adjacent public areas, which was a focus of much of the preliminary design energy, much to the benefit of customer experience. Overall Dutch East Design’s goals were to establish strong axes where previously there weren’t any, to create a socially dynamic public space, and to implement a palette and visual language befitting the locale.

Demi Monde | New York City

Demi Monde is a series of spaces within a larger whole – well-considered level changes and the existing columns and stairwell were used to create a spatially interesting and socially dynamic lounge. Luxurious diamond-tufted banquettes, blood-red high-gloss lacquered panels, the lavish drapes, and kinbaku-inspired screens all contribute to the comfort and mischief called for in this project by Dutch East Design.
